Safari Overview

Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari 2026: Witness Africa’s Greatest Wildlife Spectacle

A Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, travel across Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. Known as the Great Wildebeest Migration, this remarkable journey creates unforgettable opportunities to witness dramatic river crossings, predator-prey interactions, and the birth of thousands of wildebeest calves.

Whether you want to experience the famous Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti or the spectacular calving season in the Ndutu Plains, a Serengeti migration safari offers exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year. At Sana Wild Experience, we create tailor-made Tanzania safari tours designed to place you in the best locations at the right time to witness the most exciting stages of the migration.

What is the Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Migration is a year-round movement of animals between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. Driven by rainfall patterns, the herds follow a circular route covering nearly 1,800 miles (2,900 km).

Unlike other migrations, there is no fixed start or end — it is a continuous cycle that changes month by month.

Best Places to See the Wildebeest Migration

Ndutu Plains (December–March)

The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region host the famous calving season, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on nutrient-rich grasslands.

Central Serengeti (April–June)

Large herds move through Seronera and surrounding plains while predators closely follow the migration.

Western Corridor (June–July)

The Grumeti River crossings provide exciting wildlife encounters with crocodiles and large predator populations.

Northern Serengeti (July–October)

The Mara River crossings offer some of the most dramatic wildlife scenes in Africa as vast herds attempt to cross dangerous waters.

Why the Migration Changes Every Year

The movement of the migration depends on one key factor: rainfall.

Because rain patterns vary:

  • River crossings can happen earlier or later
  • Herds may stay longer in one region
  • Exact timing is never guaranteed

👉 This is what makes every safari unique and unpredictable
