What Is the Mara River Crossing?

The Mara River crossing is considered one of the most dramatic wildlife events on Earth. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles move through the Serengeti ecosystem searching for fresh grazing lands.

Between July and October, huge migration herds gather in Northern Serengeti before attempting dangerous crossings over the crocodile-filled Mara River into Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

The crossing is completely unpredictable. Animals may wait for hours or even days before suddenly rushing into the river together. The chaos, dust, predator action, and survival instinct create one of Africa’s most breathtaking safari moments.
