Tanzania Camping Safaris

Safari Overview

This seven-day Northern Tanzania journey has been designed for UK adventure couples searching for a safari experience that feels authentic, intimate, and immersive rather than rushed or overwhelming. The adventure begins in Tarangire National Park, continues deep into the legendary Serengeti, and concludes with the natural splendour of Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. Across the seven days, the safari covers an approximate total driving distance of 825 kilometres and around 25 to 29 hours of combined driving and game viewing transitions.

Throughout the journey, couples can expect close wildlife encounters, dramatic landscapes, unspoiled nature, shared quiet moments, and the feeling of stepping away from modern routines into the vast and unfiltered beauty of East Africa.

DAY 1: Arrival – JRO to Tarangire National Park (160 km, 3.5–4 hours)

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you meet your professional driver-guide and immediately begin your journey into the African wilderness. The first part of the drive takes you past the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro before the scenery gradually opens into the Maasai lowlands and the classic warm savannah of Tarangire National Park, characterised by sweeping landscapes and ancient baobab trees.

You enjoy your first afternoon on safari in Tarangire, a park famous for its large elephant herds, as well as giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, buffalo, and a rich variety of birds that gather along the Tarangire River. This introduction to Tanzania offers the sounds and atmosphere of the African bush from the very first day. As the light softens and the sun dips behind the horizon, you continue to your campsite for dinner and your first night in the wilderness.

DAY 2: Tarangire to Central Serengeti (250 km, 6–7 hours)

After breakfast, you leave Tarangire behind and begin the classic overland journey toward the Serengeti. The scenery evolves gradually throughout the day, with low hills and scattered acacias giving way to wide open plains as you approach Naabi Hill Gate, the official entrance into the Serengeti ecosystem.

The afternoon is spent on your first Serengeti game drive, surrounded by the vastness that has made this region famous. The area is known for big predators including lion prides resting in the shade and cheetahs perched on termite mounds scanning the plains for prey. Wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and other plains animals are often seen in impressive numbers, creating your first full sense of the Serengeti’s scale and freedom.

You arrive at your campsite in the early evening, just in time for dinner beneath a sky filled with stars, perfect for couples enjoying a peaceful and meaningful escape into nature.

DAY 3: Full Day in the Central Serengeti (60–120 km of driving depending on wildlife location, 6–8 hours of exploration)

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the central Serengeti. With a full day inside the park, your guide takes you into different areas including river systems, kopje rock formations, open grasslands, and woodland pockets that attract a remarkable variety of wildlife.

Depending on the season, you may witness the great migration herds, predators hunting at dawn, elephants cooling off around water sources, or quiet scenes of giraffes feeding among umbrella-shaped acacias. Part of the magic of the Serengeti is not just what is seen but how it feels — the sense of space, the warm wind, the openness of untouched nature, and the rare opportunity to slow down and share an experience that is both emotional and unforgettable.

You return to camp in the evening for dinner and another night surrounded by the sounds of the African night.

DAY 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (145 km, 3.5–4 hours)

After breakfast, you begin the journey out of the Serengeti with an en-route game drive, allowing for one more opportunity to encounter wildlife moving across the plains. As you leave behind the open grasslands, the landscape transitions dramatically into the volcanic highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

This change in scenery is one of the most striking visual contrasts of the journey, with the expansive plains gradually rising into forested slopes and cooler air at higher elevation. You reach the crater rim by late afternoon, with broad views and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for sunset moments shared together. Dinner and overnight are spent at the campsite positioned high above the crater floor.

DAY 5: Ngorongoro Crater Tour (Approximately 70 km of exploration, 6–7 hours of game viewing)

The day begins with an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, often considered one of the most extraordinary safari locations in the world. The crater, a collapsed volcano approximately 600 meters deep, creates a natural enclosure that supports more than 30,000 animals in a single protected basin.

During your crater tour, you may observe rare black rhinos, large buffalo herds, lions resting in the open, and large numbers of grazing animals. With some luck, you could encounter all members of the Big Five in one day. Lunch is enjoyed at the hippo pool, a peaceful place to relax while taking in the scenery and the atmosphere of wildlife living freely around you.

In the late afternoon, you return to your campsite on the crater rim for dinner and a restful evening in the highlands.

DAY 6: Ngorongoro → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

After breakfast, you depart the Ngorongoro highlands and descend toward Lake Manyara National Park, a compact but remarkably diverse reserve set beneath the towering escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Upon entering the park, the landscape quickly changes from woodland and river forest to sweeping lakeshore plains where wildlife gathers throughout the day.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons, grazing zebra, playful vervet monkeys, giraffes feeding among acacias, and elephants that often appear unexpectedly from the forest edge. The lake itself attracts a stunning array of birdlife, with flamingos, pelicans, storks, kingfishers, and more than four hundred other recorded species.

Your game drive continues through the scenic circuit as you enjoy a relaxed final wildlife experience, stopping for a picnic lunch within the park. After your safari, you continue your journey to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

This brings your adventure full circle, offering time to reflect on a week filled with iconic landscapes, wildlife encounters, and shared moments in one of Africa’s most remarkable wilderness regions.
