Safari Overview
This ten-day birding safari covers approximately 1,065 km and 27–31 travel hours across Tanzania’s most diverse habitats—an experience designed especially for UK adventure couples seeking a journey that is both wild and meaningful. Rather than rushing from park to park, this itinerary allows you to slow down, breathe in the landscape, and share quiet moments together surrounded by birdsong, forest scent, and big African skies.
From the foothills of Mount Meru to the Serengeti plains and the wetlands of Lake Manyara, each day offers new ecosystems and new species—over seven hundred possibilities in total, including migratory arrivals from November to March and dramatic resident breeding plumage throughout the year. Guided walks allow you to step into the environment together, while game drives open vast horizons filled with Trogons, Turacos, Cranes, Bustards, Eagles, Flamingos, and countless savannah and forest birds.
Carefully selected lodges ensure not just comfort, but atmosphere—places where you can share a drink under lanterns, review your sightings together, and feel genuinely connected to the natural world and each other.
DAY 1: Arrival in Arusha (55 km | 1 hr)
Your driver meets you at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfers you to River Trees Country Inn, a peaceful garden escape where the soundtrack of your journey begins—Kingfishers, Weavers, Mousebirds and Ibis often visible over your first evening drink. If time allows, a gentle stroll around the grounds provides your first chance to bird together in the warm African light.
Accommodation: River Trees Country Inn
DAY 2: Arusha National Park (Total 80 km | 2 hrs travel + 2–3 hrs walking + 3–4 hrs viewing)
After breakfast, travel to Arusha National Park for your first immersion in the forests and lakes beneath Mount Meru. The morning is spent on a guided nature walk through moss-draped rainforest alive with Turacos, Barbets, Sunbirds, Trogons and forest eagles. Lunch overlooking the Momella Lakes precedes a relaxed afternoon drive where Flamingos, Cranes, Waders, Cormorants and water raptors provide endless photographic opportunities before returning to Arusha for a quiet evening together.
Accommodation: River Trees Country Inn
DAY 3: Arusha to Tarangire (145 km | 3–3.5 hrs)
Depart after breakfast and cross the Maasai Steppe toward Tarangire National Park—one of Africa’s richest birding environments. Entering the park, bird sightings begin immediately, with Ashy Starlings, Hornbills, Hoopoes, Rollers and raptors often visible before lunch. After settling in, enjoy a relaxed evening walk through the open woodlands, an intimate moment as the bush fills with the sounds of birds returning to roost.
Accommodation: Tarangire Ndovu Tented Lodge
DAY 4: Tarangire Full Birding Day (5–6 hrs viewing)
Sunrise in Tarangire is a memory that stays with couples forever—first light, first calls, and silhouettes of Baobabs against the sky. After morning coffee, embark on extended birding where Kori Bustard, Secretary Bird, Vultures and Bustards dominate the open plains. After a midday rest, head out again for golden-hour sightings, ideal for couples who enjoy photography and the quiet magic of evening in the bush.
Accommodation: Tarangire Ndovu Tented Lodge
DAY 5: Tarangire to Karatu & Forest Birding (125 km | 3–3.5 hrs)
Begin with a dawn birding drive before returning for breakfast and departing for the highlands of Karatu. After lunch at Gibbs Farm, enjoy a guided walk toward the Elephant Caves—an intimate forest experience with potential sightings of Greenbuls, Hornbills, Turacos and Flycatchers as sunlight filters through the canopy. Evenings here are peaceful—perfect for reviewing sightings together under the stars.
Accommodation: Gibbs Farm
DAY 6: Ngorongoro Crater (95 km each way | 2–2.5 hrs + 5 hrs crater experience)
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, which holds exceptional biodiversity including numerous highland species such as Grey-crested Helmetshrikes, Black-winged Starlings, Kites, and wetland waders. A picnic lunch inside the crater gives a rare chance to sit together inside one of the world’s most extraordinary natural spaces. Return to Karatu in the afternoon with time to relax before dinner.
Accommodation: Arusha Coffee Lodge
DAY 7 & 8: Serengeti (Soronera Valley)
Leave the highlands and cross into the Serengeti, with changing habitats producing new sightings hour by hour. As you approach Seronera, Eagles, Vultures, Ostrich, Bustards and open-plains specialists become abundant. Arrive at camp in time for sunset—the Serengeti at golden hour is an unforgettable shared memory.
A full day of Serengeti exploration with emphasis on river lines, kopjes and savannahs where resident and migratory birds thrive. Whether you’re tracking a Martial Eagle on a thermal or watching Bee-eaters dance in the air, this day offers deep immersion—from sweeping views to intimate sightings shared through binoculars, cameras and conversation.
Accommodation: Serengeti Pioneer Camp
DAY 9: Serengeti to Karatu (200 km | 5–6 hrs including viewing)
Enjoy a final morning drive through Seronera before heading toward Naabi Gate and returning to Karatu. On arrival, the change in climate, vegetation and sounds makes for a peaceful final evening—often the moment when couples realize how much the journey has grounded and bonded them.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge
DAY 10: Lake Manyara & Return to Arusha (130 km | 3–3.5 hrs)
Begin the final day at Lake Manyara National Park, where seasonal waters attract Flamingos, Pelicans, Storks, Cormorants and numerous water birds. A relaxed picnic completes the experience before returning to Arusha for your onward journey, bringing ten days of shared sightings, adventure and natural beauty to a meaningful close.

He knows every detail of what somebody coming from Europe wants to see in Africa. One possibility to reduce long distance travels by car is to make part of the trip by plane, mainly the way back once you have finished the visit to the main parks. Altogether, the price-quality ratio is phantastic. Seif also speaks Spanish very very well and knows the specific names of all animals and birds in Spanish. Very recommended for Spanish tourists. We saw a lion chasing a wildebeest (the full sequence!).Posted on Christine J Unforgettable Safari and Getway After a safari with Sana wild experience I have certainly become a storyteller.
