2 Days Ol Doinyo Lengai Hike

Safari Overview

The Ol Doinyo Lengai hike takes you up a strikingly steep and symmetrical stratovolcano, towering 6,562 feet (2,000 meters) above the East African Rift Valley and reaching a summit of 9,482 feet (2,890 meters). Known to the Maasai as the “Home of Gods,” this active volcano is the only one in the world that erupts Natrocarbonatite lava.

The trek offers a truly unique adventure, passing through alpine lakes, waterfalls, gorges, and streams while giving you a rare glimpse of glowing molten lava.

Ol Doinyo Lengai climb highlights:

  • Hike up an active volcano in the night
  • Watch the soft glow of fresh lava on the Ol Doinyo Lengai hike
  • Visit the Lake Natron, Ngarasero Waterfall, and other unique spots

DAY 1: Doinyo Lengai Hike: Drive to Lake Natron; trek to Ngaresero Waterfall and back

It is an area of spectacular beauty and excellent game viewing, a truly unique safari destination in Africa

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before heading to the stunning Lake Natron. The scenic drive is long but rewarding, and you’ll arrive just after lunch. After settling in, embark on a guided walk to Ngaresero Waterfall, where the trail winds through a gorge with stream crossings—sandals are recommended. Later, enjoy a short drive to the lakeshore, where you can capture its breathtaking scenery before returning to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Overnight: Lake Natron camps
Trekking time: 6 – 7 hours.
Meals included: Half board

DAY 2: Doinyo Lengai Hike: Summit Day!

Today, you’ll be woken up by midnight to start your hike to the summit. After something to eat, you will be driven to the base of the mountain to start your Ol Doinyo Lengai climb. The slopes of the volcano can be treacherous, especially in the dark, so follow your guide carefully. The trek is strenuous and takes between 7 and 10 hours depending on your fitness and pace.

Once at the Lengai summit, the new crater rim, you will spend sometimes taking photos and resting. Soon, you’ll begin your descent back to the base. The descend is very steep, so listen carefully to the instructions of the guide.

Your drive will be waiting at the bottom to take you to the lodge to freshen up and drive back to Arusha or continue with other activities.

Trekking time: 7-10 hrs
Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch.
