The park’s elevation varies from 750 to 1,900 meters above sea level, and its landscapes include miombo woodlands, grasslands, and rocky outcrops. The park’s name “Ruaha” is derived from the Hehe word for “river,” which refers to the Great Ruaha River that flows through the park.

The park is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), as well as other predators like cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs. The park’s open grasslands and woodlands make it an ideal place for spotting a wide variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and antelopes.

One of the park’s main attractions is the Great Ruaha River, which flows through the park and provides a lifeline for the park’s wildlife. The river is home to a large concentration of crocodiles, hippos, and fish, making it a popular spot for birdwatching and fishing. Another popular attraction is the Mwagusi River, which flows through the park’s scenic Mwagusi Valley.

Ruaha National Park is also an important habitat for many bird species, with over 570 species recorded in the park. The park’s diverse landscapes and habitats support a wide range of birdlife, from waterbirds to raptors and songbirds.
